Oil Is Ignoring the Headlines. We Think That Won't Last.

One of the most surprising features of the 2026 Iran conflict is not what oil has done—it is what oil hasn't done.

The United States has released roughly 172 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), reducing inventories to approximately 320 million barrels, the lowest level since the early 1980s. The International Energy Agency coordinated an unprecedented 400-million-barrel emergency release among member nations. Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz—through which roughly 20% of global oil consumption normally transits—has experienced its largest disruption in modern history.

Yet today Brent crude trades near $76 per barrel, remarkably close to where it began the conflict.

At first glance, the market appears to be telling us that the geopolitical risk has passed.

We believe that interpretation is incomplete.
